Teacher of Civil War Generals: Major General Charles Ferguson Smith, Soldier and West Point Commandant
I am not aware of any C.F. Smith biographies so the publication of Mesch’s book is a welcome event for those that like to study the early war in the West. The bibliography size and breadth won’t blow anyone away but then again I have no idea what source material regarding Smith is available. The notes for several chapters do refer heavily to Smith’s papers, which support the “(d)rawing on never before published letters and journals” part of the book description.
Thanks for the kind introduction. I hope they will provide a complete review in the near future.
4 I received the proofs for Teacher of Civil War Generals. My job over the next few weeks will be to find and correct the errors and prepare an index. I made some quick changes to the text based on errors that I discovered over the past few months. Then I turned over the text to my wife, Sharlyn, for her review. While she is checking the contents for errors, I will be working on the index.
